In celebration of the anniversary of that memorable event and in an effort to help keep the memory of Robinson alive, the Pittsburgh Pirates are inviting elementary and middle school students to participate in the Jackie Robinson "Breaking Barriers In Sports, In Life" Poetry and Essay Contest again this year. The contest -- which is open to those in grades three through eight in the Pirates' market area -- asks students to write about Robinson's nine values for success in either a poem or an essay. Last year, more than 1, entries were received in connection with this initiative, which offers young people a great opportunity to express their thoughts creatively and a meaningful way to reflect on the importance of Black History Month.
A committee reads the thousands of submissions and selects the most inspirational stories. Bizunesh Keith, a 5th grader out of Marietta, took home the 2nd place prize for her age group.
Bizunesh, or Buzae as she answers to friends and family, wrote about her struggles of overcoming color barriers at school after being adopted from Ethiopia with her sister a few years ago. Click here to read her award-winning essay: Bizunesh Keith Bizunesh along with the other 1st and 2nd place winners all received brand new Microsoft laptops, Breaking Barriers shirts for them and their class, and a book written by Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson.
Teachers of the winning students received a Microsoft tablet. Homer interrupted her class during a poetry reading to surprise Bizunesh with a bouquet of balloons and tickets to the Braves game that Friday where she would be honored on-field.
